Citriodiol, also known as p- Menthane-3,8-diol or PMD, is the most effective natural ingredient known against a range of insects. Citriodiol is found in the essential oils of the Eucalyptus Citriodora tree and is a worthy alternative to the chemical equivalent DEET. Female biting insects are attracted to animals by skin odours and Carbon Dioxide from exhaled breath. The Citriodiol produces vapours which makes the horse’s odour unattractive to female insects, and as a result makes horses an unappealing food source.
Citriodiol is the only natural ingredient approved by the HSE as an insect repellent. The HSE works on behalf of the UK Government to ensure systems are in place to control risks to people and their pets. Natural Insect Repellent contains the strongest concentrations of Citriodiol on the market and as a result will give far longer protection than most other products. For horses that have an intolerance of sprays or for a more concentrated application, natural formulations of Gel and Wipes are also available.
Always read the labels of insect repellents before purchase to ensure the percentage of active ingredients will provide an effective coverage.
